Car Troubles
It's really stressful to own a car. Not only are you inside something that can kill you if you make a wrong move, you're inside something that can kill or hurt others. Thank God I haven't been so unfortunate yet. But I have made a mistake. When driving down to Mountain View I missed a turn, so I had to do a U-turn off a side road. Well my car turns like a truck. I feel like I've mentioned that before but it bears repeating. The turn radius of my car is uncomfortably large, it's difficult to park, and it's not that easy to pull off a U-turn. This time was not successful. I turned as far as I could in one direction, and wound up pulling up on someones driveway in front of a wooden fence. But there was no traffic on that street, it was easy enough to just reverse and adjust to be on my merry way. Wouldn't you know at that moment I got a text message. I was stopped, so I felt like I was fine to look at the message. It wasn't really too important of a message, and I don't remember exactly what it was. I put the phone down, looked back out the rear window, and lightly tapped the gas to back out. Uh-oh. The car was moving forward, I had forgotten to change gears. Crunch, went the fence in front of me, and my front-right fender isn't much better for it either.
Being the upright citizen that I am, I left a note to the owner of the house, and we arranged to fix the fence, I paid for the repairs in full. Money is such a fleeting thing. The gas prices in California are also not helping the pain in my wallet. Around where I am they are close to $3.00 per gallon. California tacks on a 30 cent per gallon tax on gas, on top of a 2.5% sales tax. And what makes it worse is my family back on the East coast went on a road trip down through Virginia and North Carolina, and they told me they saw gas for $1.68 per gallon.
But the dent really isn't that bad. The headlight still works fine, although my wheel squeaks a little when I go over bumps a little too quickly. What is really troubling me is my battery. Last Thursday I got dinner at a Burger King, I could probably do a post on all the fast food that's down here in California, and I was listening to NPR like the godless liberal that I am, and they were airing the Democratic Convention, Hillary Clinton was giving her speech accepting the nomination. Well I thought the speech was fine, but wouldn't you know it, when I went to turn the engine back on the blasted thing wouldn't turn over. I wound up calling a tow truck, who had to give me a ride over to a gas station to get some money out of an ATM. The gas station was supposed to be closed, but there were still a few nice ladies inside, cleaning up, and they let me in. A got a jump, but the whole experience cost me about $60. It feels like the battery struggles to start the engine even when it hasn't been playing the radio for an hour. But it's started every time since.
More recently though I did have to get more roadside assistance. By this time I had AAA, which really saved my butt. I locked my keys in my car's trunk after shopping, and I had to call AAA. My phone was nearly out of battery so I had to go back inside the store and ask to use their phone. Everything turned out all right. The AAA guy was super nice, he opened the car door by using an inflatable bag slipped into the car door, it looked a bit like the sleeve you would use to measure blood pressure.
Since then really not much else. The check engine light came on, and sometimes when I haven't driven the car in a while it shakes around a bit. But I really don't need it to last forever. Just for another five months.
